Speaking from the city on Monday, Don Damond, Justine Damond's fiance, said that she had called 911 to report what she thought was a sexual assault occurring in a nearby alley, before the tragic turn of events.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Relatives of an Australian woman who was fatally shot by police in Minneapolis say they've lost "a loving free spirit". How and why Justine came to be fatally wounded is not yet known; body cameras normally worn by the cops were switched off and the police auto did not capture the incident.
"Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue S just before 11.30pm Saturday".
"I share the same questions other people have about why we don't have body cam footage of it", said Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges.
According to the standard procedure, the two officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave, the Minneapolis Police confirmed.
"I have a lot of questions about why the body cameras weren't on", Hodges said at the news conference. Exact details weren't released but officials said an officer at some point fired a gun, killing the woman.
Cosmo DiNardo charged with 4 homicides, 2nd man accused in 3 slayings
It's believed that DiNardo and Kratz used construction equipment from his father's business to dig a hole on the 90-acre property. On Monday, the suspected killer was also charged with being in possession of a shotgun in an unrelated case from February.
Ms Damond, whose maiden name is believed to be Ruszczyk and who was a qualified veterinary surgeon but working as a spiritual healer, was due to marry 50-year-old Mr Damond, whose name she had already taken, next month.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs put out a brief statement on behalf of her family.
They also put out a brief statement on behalf of the woman's family.
A vigil for Ms Damond held on Sunday attracted hundreds of people.
Ms Damond, a meditation teacher from Sydney, was standing outside the driver's door at the time, reportedly dressed in her pyjamas.
