Governor Rauner says he'll take that money and put it towards school districts statewide. Rauner reiterated his call on Monday morning for IL lawmakers to send him a school funding overhaul by noon, saying he will call a special session this week if it's not on his desk.
For tired IL taxpayers, it's just the latest flashpoint in an ongoing struggle between the first-term Republican executive and majority legislative Democrats. Data posted on his website indicated the bill's $293 million funding boost for CPS for state aid and pensions would be sliced almost in half, freeing up $145 million for other school districts.
The Mayor acknowledges that he met with House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton prior to his talking with reporters at an unrelated event. "It's over. If schools want to open on time, only SB1 in its current form, '" Rauner said.
Gov. Bruce Rauner has summoned lawmakers into special session to settle the public education funding issue weeks before the school bell is set to ring. The median state funding increase for Kankakee County school districts under the plan would be $56,806. But threatened with a veto, the Senate never sent Rauner that legislation, prompting the governor's call for special session.

Republicans object to provisions in the bill they say bails out Chicago's pension system. That has raised the possibility some school districts largely dependent on state funding may not be able to open in August. We slowed down the process in the Senate in order to let everyone blow off some steam, politically-speaking.
Rauner, who insisted on getting the bill on his desk before holding any discussions, declined to describe in detail his amendatory veto plans for CPS funding in the bill.
Next week students in the Rock Island/Milan School District will head back to school.
