It would be Hamilton who drew first blood as he led for most of the 90-minute session, with Max Verstappen second for Red Bull at their home circuit.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix victor Ricciardo was 0.39 seconds off in the second session and 0.645 in the morning.
Hamilton said there were still some "driveability issues", and the team had started out in a good place with the balance of a vehicle that team boss Toto Wolff has called "a bit of a diva". "The auto feels really good all around the lap".
Hamilton was leading the race in Baku but was forced to pit midway through on safety grounds after his headrest came loose.
"It's a short track, so you imagine it'll be close", he said.

Verstappen, Haas driver Romain Grosjean, and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr wobbled on the same turn - as did Hamilton late into P1.
At a packed news conference on Thursday (Friday NZT), Vettel made a full apology which Hamilton accepted - although he maintained the German driver should have been further punished over the incident.
It is unclear if the Hamilton damage was related to the hit from behind that he suffered when Sebastian Vettel ran into him in their controversial incident under the safety auto.
Vettel was given a time penalty during that race but escaped further punishment from the FIA, motor sport's governing body, following a hearing on Monday (Tuesday NZT).
