The theatre owners made a decision to cancel all the shows from 3rd of July after the state government imposed 30 percent entertainment tax. After a meeting with finance minister D.Jayakumar, Abirami Ramanathan, president of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners and Distributors Association said the minister has assured to solve the issue after holding discussion with chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy.
"Regional cinema is the strength of the Indian cinema and diversity must be maintained in India", he has said and added that the tax on regional cinema be revised to 12 to 15% instead. Tamil Nadu theatres will be ending advance appointments of tickets from Sunday and all shows over the state's theatres will be suspended beginning one week from now, with film theatre affiliations requesting a move back to the metropolitan assessment.
"Film industry needs to speak in one voice".
Going to the movies is such an important part of public life in Tamil Nadu that, for many years, the state's political elite have been alumni of its hugely popular film industry. "We urge the government not to levy local body taxes and also consider increasing ticket prices, which have remained unchanged for about 15 years".
The film industry strike has put shutters on four newly released movies - Ivan Thandhiran, Engeyum Naan Iruppen, Kaadhal Kaalam, Dubbed version of Mohanlal movie Puli Murugan.

This 58% tax composes of GST tax of 28% and 30%tax which is imposed by municipal cooperation. "They announced the strike without prior notice", Kannan said.
Reacting on the double taxation by the state, Haasan said in a statement: "Filmmaking has been made hard deliberately". The GST is charged over and aboce the entertainment tax. The theatre owners asserted that they are unable to cope with the huge tax burden.
