No successor has yet been named but, CBS has plenty of would-be anchors waiting in the wings for what used to be, anyway, a plum position. Two people familiar with the situation on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, confirmed the reports. Pelley did not anchor the broadcast Tuesday, as it was announced he was on assignment for "60 Minutes".
Pelley succeeded Katie Couric as anchor on June 5, 2011. He has been at CBS News for more than 30 years, joining the network in 1986 in the London bureau.
The CBS news magazine is adding Oprah Winfrey as a contributor next season and will take on Megyn Kelly's new NBC program, which debuts Sunday. "So has his dedication to consequential reporting", said Jeff Fager, executive producer of 60 Minutes. "I'm glad to accept this assignment with continuing gratitude". As of this writing, the network's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles all still feature Pelley's name or likeness in the profile image, bio or title of the page. Sources said Pelley personally asked to have his office cleared out on Tuesday even though he was out of town.
Pelley's has a long history with "60 Minutes", winning almost all of his 33 Emmys with the investigative program.
Instead, in TV terms, Pelley often came off as stiff, formal and self-important in presideing over an evening news that seemed out of step with the pace of digital media today. Evening news ratings have been down while news junkies turn to prime-time cable newscasts.
Page Six had earlier reported in December that Pelley would step down from his role, however the network denied it saying "There's no truth to this".
