With play completed, Johnson finished in a two-way T2, one back of champion Brian Harman, who birdied his final two holes for 68.
He closed with a four-under 68 to finish at 10 under for his second PGA Tour victory. But Harman shut the door on a potential three-way playoff by drilling a 30-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole. Playing for the first time since a slip down some stairs resulted in a back injury that knocked Johnson out of the Masters last month, he posted back-to-back 67s after barely making the cut on Friday.
"Knew it was going to be tough to birdie those last couple", Harman said. I've been working really hard. "My tee shot was pretty good all day, I just have to work on my putting".
And it was just enough.
Harman missed a four-foot par putt at the par-3 15th to fall one adrift but sank a four-foot birdie putt at 17 to match clubhouse leaders Perez and Johnson.
Perez bounced back strongly with birdies on the 16th and smart play on the 18th, taking on the water that runs along the right side of the hole and laying up to trust his short game.
After a free drop, Harman somewhat stubbed his chip shot, landing on the green but 28 feet away and in need of a birdie to take the lead at 10 under par.
His approach at 18 bounded well left of the green and his pitch left him an unlikely birdie putt to grab the lead, but he rammed it home and began a screaming, fist-pumping, high-five-filled celebration. "Not much has changed". This was his first time playing in six weeks, and while there were signs of rust, he looked like the same old Johnson over the weekend as he tried to make up ground and nearly did.

Geng, however, also said China was "firmly committed" to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula through dialogue and consultation.
"I think it was the definition of survival out there", Wie said.
Daly, 51, won for the first time since the PGA Tour's 2004 Buick Invitational.
"I'm happy with where the game is going into next week", Johnson said.
"I definitely learnt from my first win ..."
A play-off looked likely when the 30-year-old from Georgia only just managed to chip onto the green for three after flying his second at the par-five over the back of the green.
"Made a nice putt there on the last hole", Johnson said.
Spain's rising star Jon Rahm ended up in fourth on -8 after a final round 71 while Smylie Kaufman, Kevin Tway and Seung-Yul Noh were in a three-way share of fifth on -7.
