Elizabeth was missing for more than a month after she was allegedly kidnapped by her former teacher, 50 year-old Tad Cummins.
Meanwhile, Thomas' family lawyer says the teen was "evaluated and treated" by mental health experts before her return home to Columbia, Tennessee. Cummins was charged with kidnapping and a misdemeanor of sexual contact with a minor during his disappearance. Galloway said his client was not a unsafe flight risk because the allegations against him do not include threats or coercion and that this is "not an abduction or kidnapping".
The federal judge read Tad Cummins his charges, which include transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in sexual activity.
"What do you say in these circumstances?"
Eventually, authorities caught up to Cummins and Thomas in Northern California. Quinn said. "What were you thinking?"
The federal charge carries a 10 year minimum sentence and $250,000 fine if Cummins is convicted.
The US Attorney's Office is requesting that Cummins remain detained pending trial in the Middle District of Tennessee.
Chappell edges in front in Texas
Ryan Palmer, a West Texas native who cut through winds as strong as 25 miles per hour , had the round of the day with 4-under 68. He sank a 56-foot putt to birdie earlier at No. 6, so he 2-putted for the birdie at 17 and ran in another birdie at 18.
"I'm not allowed to ask her about things that happened along the way right now", he said. "It was kind of a roller coaster of emotions for her". She has returned home.
"She told us she didn't have access to telephone, internet, any electronic devices".
According to federal prosecutors in California, Cummins told investigators that he had plans to escape to Mexico on the way to Central or South America.
A former Tennessee teacher accused of kidnapping his teenage student wanted to flee to Mexico with the girl, federal prosecutors said Monday. Cummins, too, was gone, after borrowing his wife's Nissan Rogue and having recently filled prescriptions for erectile disfunction medicine and securing a $4,500 loan.
Cummins and Elizabeth were found on April 20 at a remote cabin in northern California near the OR border after over a month on the run.
Before disappearing, Cummins was investigated by the school system when another student reported seeing the then-married teacher kiss the girl at the Culleoka Unit School.
The pair's disappearance generated more than 1,500 tips, a sighting in Oklahoma City and Amber alerts in Tennessee and Alabama.
