In a departure from the book, Hannah's devastated parents (Kate Walsh and Brian d'Arcy James) are key characters - and the depiction of their grief, confusion, and despair is one of the most heartbreaking aspects of the series.

Teens are the intended core of the 13 Reasons Why audience, but this is a show that believes teens are capable of watching the things teens are capable of doing. Hannah's journey of humiliation, thwarted hope and misery is a disgusting one, but Langford's heartbreaking openness makes you root for a fate you know isn't possible.
