Abdullah is contesting from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency as a candidate for the NC-Congress alliance in Jammu and Kashmir. The polling in the constituency is to be held on April 9. "A politician of the stature of Abdullah has also come under pressure of upcoming polls and therefore has felt tempted to speak the language of the separatists", Singh told reporters outside Parliament.
According to him, New Delhi and Islamabad's failure to engage with each other bilaterally over the years has added weight to the argument for worldwide mediation. "If India doesn't start a serious dialogue, then we will urge and welcome the USA involvement in resolving the Kashmir issue", Dr Abdullah said.
"Every conscientious individual and organization in Kashmir - whether mainstream or separatist - should have the ultimate aim of facilitating a resolution of the political issue to give relief, hope and peace to our people".
He was reacting to India rejecting third party mediation on the Kashmir issue.
