One of the surgeons now treating her, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala, said he believed Abd El Aty had obsesity-related lymphedema, which also causes swelling, and not elephantiasis.
"Eman has lost over 100 kilograms and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support", she told AFP.
After undergoing surgery, Abd El Aty has been on oral fluids, which she is accepting without issues. As she grew older, she suffered from severe illnesses like diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure.
According to medical experts, Abd El Aty was born at 5kg at birth and was suffering from a disruption of the glands as well as from a parasite called elephantiasis. She is believed to be around 400kgs before going for the surgery. There is no history of obesity in her family, inclining the doctors to suspect a genetic mutation may be responsible for the uncontrolled weight gain.
Ahmed was initially refused a visa for India because of her inability to get to the embassy in person, until the process was expedited by India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.
Eman went through Bariatric surgery which is a stomach-shrinking bypass procedure carried out on those wanting to lose excessive weight.
